Gio Ponti Superleggera Chair Cassina 1951-1957

Superleggera (= very light) chair, model 699. designed by Gio Ponti from 1951-1957 for Cassina Italy.
A modern design icon, and one of the most celebrated designs by this Italian master.
Its name expresses the Milanese architect’s desire to create the lightest chair possible. That took him years to perfect, paring down the triangular section of the legs to only 18 millimeters to reach the actual minimum weight of just 1,700 grams. The result is amazing; so light and yet so strong and comfortable. And besides that the chair is also very elegant. A true master-piece.
The chair has a solid black lacquered (still the original paint) ash frame and a renewed papercord seat. It is an early edition and it is not marked.
The chair is in very good condition. Some normal wear on the frame.
