Gio Ponti Superleggera Chair for Cassina Italy 1951-1957
Superleggera (= very light) chair, model 699. designed by Gio Ponti from 1951-1957 for Cassina Italy.
A modern design icon, and one of the most celebrated designs by this Italian master.
Its name expresses the Milanese architect’s desire to create the lightest chair possible. That took him years to perfect, paring down the triangular section of the legs to only 18 millimeters to reach the actual minimum weight of just 1,700 grams. The result is amazing; so light and yet so strong and comfortable. And besides that the chair is also very elegant. A true master-piece.
The chair has a solid ash frame and a straw seat. It is an early edition and it is not marked.
The chair is in good condition with some traces of wear, especially on the frame. The straw seat is still good, no damages. The chair is sturdy.
